Summer 2022

This coming summer will be a welcome change from the  Covid complications of the last couple of years.

The workshop in Durfort is running again and the studio has been rejigged to operate more comfortably with more space to work.

All  the  cancellations from last year are of course offered first place so if this is you an email to confirm this is waiting in your inbox.

The cost of the workshop with accommodation, all materials, finishing, full support and meals (ex- breakfast) for 2022 is $2000/£1600/1700Euros.
You may of course wish to arrange your own accommodation and the cost for this option is $1500/£1200/1300 Euros.

This payment does not include either your air fares or French car hire costs. Whist exchange rates fluctuate my costs are kept as tight as possible., not changing year on year.

The workshop is aimed at people of all ages and abilities, this means I can provide as much technical support, space and creative encouragement as you may need.
Please let me know of any specific personal requirements when making your booking.

Should you wish to attend with children it will be necessary to arrange a separate visit outside the week listed here

On the evening of the arrival day (29th) we will take a short walk around the village, offering you a feel of the surrounding landscape and environment, along with the layout and architecture of Durfort. A chance to ask questions and familiarise yourself with the surroundings as the sun goes down.

On the morning of Saturday 30th July, we will go as a group in shared cars to the local market in Revel.
This is a wonderful weekly market and has all you would hope to find in a southern French marketplace.
Following our market visit we will have a light lunch and spend the afternoon in the studio with our first foray into  silk and the studio itself.
Sunday 31st will be our first morning in the studio and you  will slowly begin  to explore further the use of dyes and resists, water and salt.

Over the next five days ( 1st to the 5th ) the workshop will follow a regular daily pattern enabling you to choose how you use your time in Durfort.
Friday 5th August will be your last day and I will ask you to complete any work you may have by 13.00 so i can steam it by the evening ready for you to take home the next day.
Each evening we will eat together in the village or at local restaurants a short drive from the village.
When booking please let me know of any special dietary requirements you may have. All meals excluding breakfast are included in the cost.

You will be arranging your own breakfast and there are boulangeries in neighbouring Soreze and Revel where delicious fresh pastries can be obtained each morning.

Each day ( except Saturday 30th ) we will meet in the studio at around 9.30 am and spend the morning painting with a short break for coffee and biscuits mid-morning.
At 13.30 we will break for lunch - this will either be home cooked in the village or at a local restaurant.

During the workshop you will be using Habotai 8 silk of various sizes. Habotai is a soft medium weight sheer silk originally from Japan but now made in China. It was traditionally used for Kimonos. and now often used for Lingerie, scarves and blouses. Habotai 8 refers to the weight of the silk and while weight ranges from 5mm to 16 mm I prefer 8mm as it is easy to work with.

We shall begin by working with small silk squares to practice technique and the use of brushes/water/resist, once you are more confident we can move onto larger pieces including scarves.

This year we will be creating some bespoke silk clothing and will include this as a part of your workshop experience.

After the initial small squares, you will be able to create a four or six-foot-long scarf and two square or rectangular pictures of medium size as part of the inclusive cost.

In addition, should you wish it, there will be a pure silk top available for you to create a unique piece of clothing of your own design. I will need to know your suitable European size when making your booking.

Outside of these above-mentioned
silks there will be a charge at very reasonable cost for any extra pieces

The accommodation will be in the village in an ancient house built in the 14th/15th century around 1300 - 1400 AD
The houses are made of timber and local stone, each one being unique in its history, layout and ambience.
You will usually share the house with others attending the course.

The bedrooms are mostly single or shared with twin beds.
A double room is available should you wish to bring a partner along, there is a reduced price for partners not doing silk painting. There is also a special price for children accompanying their parents. Please let me know if you wish to bring children and if they will want to participate with the silk painting.

There are special reduced rates for students by arrangement.
I will need proof of current study, current course documentation, International Student Identity Card or similar proof is required.

There are also reduced rates for those coming on a return visit.

For anyone who may wish to stay in the village before travelling on in Europe after the course i am able to offer overnight lodging and a simple meal for one night at no further charge, please let me know beforehand if this is of interest.

The nearest airports are Toulouse and Carcassonne with Toulouse being the best for International flights.
The village of Durfort and directions can be found on the map page on this website

Car Hire:
I would suggest sharing the cost of car hire and by doing so the individual cost will be in the region of 175 – 250 euros per week depending on the model of car hired.

Car hire companies include the following:
Avis - www.avis.com
Ada – www.ada.fr
Hertz – www.hertz.co.uk/France
Sixt – www.sixt.com
Europecar – www.europcar.com

These companies are usually available at both Toulouse and Carcassonne airports.
I can connect you with other people attending the workshop for car sharing nearer the time of the course.
I hope to have provided enough information about the course and accommodation but there will no doubt be questions.

Please email me with any queries and I will respond with helpful, practical answers as soon as possible.
