I am pleased to be able to offer a very

relaxing two or three day weekend silk

painting tutorial session at my home and

studio in Battle East Sussex . 

No previous experience is required. 


I currently have accommodation for one. 

There are also many Hotels, Air B+B,Cottage

rentals in and around the town of Battle and

booking in advance is advised.

My home is a Grade 2

listed cottage circa 1680. 

A heavily beamed and

truly charming period house 

close to the high street

and its wide range of facilities. 


These include Battle Abbey,

the site of the famous

1066 Battle of Hastings

antiques, clothing and art.


The studio where we will work is set in my species

rich garden, a short walk from the house.

Organic Tea/Coffee/Soft drinks and a light lunch

are all included whilst working at the studio.

The weekend will be based around the use of silk

dyes and resists such as Gutta.

The dyes we will use are Dupont and the silk will

be Habotai 8 or 10.

Habotai is a soft, lightweight, lustrous silk,

wth a tight plain weave and very fine yarns.

It has a limp, soft, thin hand and slippery, smooth


You will stretch and pin your silk fabric pieces

onto wooden frames, learning how to create the

necessary tensions for painting. Discover how dye

reacts with the fabric, and how to control that


Exploring how dye is affected by the use of

water , alcohol or salt both before

and after the application of dyes.

We will learn about colours

and colour mixing and the use Gutta,

a water  based resist,

to control the movement of dyes

within the fabric, creating designs for


You will experiment

with ideas and techniques

on small silk fabric pieces.

Then when you are ready,

 create one or two pieces

 of your design up

to 0.50 mtr x 0.50 mtr.

Or, should you wish,

one piece and a hand

hemmed silk scarf.

Your finished works I will

three hour steam fix and

post on to your desired address

once ready.

Studio time with me

on each of the two/three

days will be between

10.00 and 16.00

with a break for lunch.

Should you wish to work

on alone in the studio

for an hour or so

outside this time

this is possible

with no difficulty.

There are only three places

available on any weekend

for your creative learning experience,

and space allowing you to truly enjoy

your time here in Battle.

The cost of the weekend

including all materials,

tuition, light lunches

and steam finishing is

£350.00 for two days or

£450.00 for three days

without accommodation

per person payable

by cheque or cash

once booking has been confirmed

or on arrival.

Should you wish to stay

at the house the cost will be

385.00 for two days with one overnight stay

or£520.00 for three days with two overnight stays

including all materials, tuition, light lunches

and steam finishing, accommodation

and evening meals.

Should you wish I am able to offer one or two

hour drop in sessions by arrangement at my


This can be as one offs or on a regular

drop in as best suits you. These sessions will cost

£30.00 per hour with all basic materials including

silk fabric.
